Am 4. und 5. September 2016 fand das Gipfeltreffen der Gruppe der 20 führenden Industrie- und Schwellenländer (G20) in Hangzhou, China statt. The 2030 Agenda goes far beyond previous development agendas. First, it recognizes that inequality and unsustainable consumption and production are by-products of economic growth and constitute a big challenge in a world of finite resources.  This understanding would have been unthinkable as little as 10 years ago.

Vom 11. bis 20. Juli 2016 tagte in New York das Hochrangige Politische Forum (High-Level Political Forum, HLPF) der Vereinten Nationen. Es ist das zentrale UN-Gremium für nachhaltige Entwicklung und soll hauptsächlich die Umsetzung der 2030-Agenda und ihrer globalen Nachhaltigkeitsziele (Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs) überwachen.

Das HLPF ist ein zwischenstaatliches Forum, an dem alle 193 Mitgliedsstaaten der Vereinten Nationen teilnehmen können. On 11 March 2016 the UN Statistical Commission agreed “as a practical starting point” with the proposed global indicator framework by which to measure progress towards the 17 goals and 169 targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Am 21. März 2005 veröffentlichte  UN-Generalsekretär Kofi Annan seinen mit Spannung erwarteten Bericht zur Vorbereitung auf den Millennium+5 Gipfel im September 2005.  Der Titel „In größerer Freiheit:  Auf dem Weg zu Entwicklung, Sicherheit und Menschenrechten für alle“ ist ein  bewusster Rückgriff auf die Präambel der UN-Charta. Dass Kofi  Annan den Begriff „Freiheit“ so explizit betont, kann aber auch als  Konzession an die gegenwärtige US-Politik interpretiert werden, die diesem Begriff zentrale Bedeutung  beimisst.
